*Davenport had won the last 7 straight slow pitch state championships.
**Sentinel had been ranked 2nd or 3rd all season.

Keota played very well thru the state action, coming out strong early to defeat Davenport and Sentinel.  They trailed top ranked Arapaho 2 to 0 until the 4th inning, which ended with a 2-2 tie.  The Ladies pulled away in the 5th to seal the deal with a 6-2 victory and their first ever state championship.

About 100 Keota fans were at the games and the celebration began as they swarmed the field.  The team spent the night in OKC and returned home to the next day to be greeted by a whole lot of excited and proud students and school personnel.  See story and pictures below.

"This was a very special group that worked extremely hard and put a lot of time into being the best they could be"

"I felt like it was a real special feeling to be a Keota Lion whether you were a member of the team or not.
The girls and myself really appreciated that special welcome home.

Coach Darrell Jones

Pictures hardly tell the story.  All I can say is "You should've been there!"  The whole school turned out to greet the Lady Lions as they returned from the successful bid for the State Championship.  Some elementary students presented them the congratulation cards and drawings.  Others released a very large number of black and orange balloons.  The high school students and teachers held up banners and posters conveying the pride we all felt in this history making moment.  The bus had made a couple of trips through town upon arrival and some of our patrons had come to join in the celebration, which lasted quite a while as the girls rushed off the bus in excitement.  Coach Darrell Jones proudly held up the trophy, cameras were pointed and video rolled, hugs, laughter, tears of joy, and happy chaos went on for a good while.   Lady Lions, we are so proud of you and appreciate the dedication of you and your coaches.  When you shine, you shine on Lions.  Forever Lions!  Forever Proud!
In 2000, the Lady Lions, coached by Debbie Jennings, had gone undefeated in district and regional playoffs, but had been eliminated in the first game of the State Tournament.  That was another first in school history.  You can see their tribute page at 2000 SB Tribute.
